Identifying the leaves of an elm

Learning to identify trees can be fun when talking the time to really look and see what is before us. With pencil and paper in hand, we will look at the most notable features of each tree:
  • bark pattern and texture
  • leaf type and arrangement
  • canopy and crown shape
  • branch growth and structure
Guided walks available. Inquire by email. Prior drawing experience not required. All materials provided.

Reaching around an oak tree

"When living in times of stress, there is something very satisfying about standing in front of a tree that has been growing for more than a hundred years. To study it's leaves, the pattern of its bark and to learn a little more about it - this seems like a good thing to do"

CONNECT FOR CONSERVATION
Feeling a sense of connection to the natural world is the foundation to any activity around conservation, for it is only when we have the experience of place and awareness of species that we begin to care. A connection to nature can begin with simple steps of spending more time outdoors or learning a little bit about the diversity of life around us. When we develop a connection to nature, it not only improves our own health but it inspires us to protect local ecosystems for generations to come. This video is part of a series on habitat loss advocating for the protection of a natural area in the Guildwood community of east Toronto, along the shores of Lake Ontario.
LISTEN FOR RELAXATION
The benefits of listening to sounds of nature have been widely accepted as being restorative. To hear waves washing along a natural sand beach can provide the same benefit as if we were right there walking barefoot in the sand. The iconic sound of repeating waves is easily recognized and creates a deep sense of calm. Without even realizing it, our heart rate naturally slows as we begin to match our breathe to the rhythm. This video along with others on my Nature Studio YT Channel have been created for the express purpose of relaxation - enjoy the gentle sound of waves and imagine yourself walking in the cool fresh water. This video was taken along the northern shores of Lake Ontario in east Toronto.
