About
My art is based in traditional materials with nature as a source of inspiration. Fortunate to have the early life experiences of spending time outdoors where play fostered creativity, the practice extends to my work as an artist. Much of the work I do is in response to the natural world around us where shapes, form, line, texture and light are in constant interplay and full of life.
A strong influence in my work has been growing up in a family that built their livelihoods through the skillful use of their hands. My father was a stone mason and builder and my mother a sewer and baker. In some ways I feel like my work is a cumulation of these influences. From a young age I was sewing clothes and working with tools; either hammering nails or mixing cement. I'm naturally drawn to the diversity of working in a range of materials.
I've had some work in exhibitions and did commissioned dog portraits in oil for over five years. Recent creative work includes garden design and scenic painting in the film industry. My art education, often motivated by a desire to learn painting included Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto School of Art and The Art Students League in New York. My work in wire and concrete is self-taught.
My experience as an instructor began as a way to share my love of drawing with others and has led to working in a range of capacities from vulnerable youth to private schools and adults. I began as a volunteer instructor with Art Start providing classes in NYC's shelter system. The experience of art making a difference in a child's life has stayed with me.
Since that time I've delivered countless classes to students in age from 4 to 84 years. Class content has varied over the years (painting, drawing and sculpture) but regardless the material, the primary focus is to instil the spark of creative joy in the lives of others.
