Concrete Objects
An interest in sculpture has always been with me and was explored when considering majoring in ceramics. Drawn at the time to slab construction, I loved the heavy feel of constructing and building with slabs of clay. I recall when on the wheel after making a very large bowl that was much too thick that the instructor critiqued my work accusing it of looking like concrete. To me that was a moment of success but I didn't continue with ceramics. I would eventually work in concrete. I was interested in the durability of the material and wanted to create water bowls for the garden. A simple form with a pool of water to capture the sky's reflection. It was the middle of winter 2019 when I set up an indoor make-shift concrete studio and began learning about the unique properties of the material. Concrete is not very sculptural-friendly; much like working with cold mud yet once the material begins to set it's possible to shape pieces that can also be carved and chiselled. The objects below represent some smaller pieces. I continue to work in concrete though mostly in summer with an interest in birds, garden troughs and water bowls.
