Techniques in Soft Clay Sculpture

Soft clay is an oil-based modelling clay called plasticine. It is a versatile artist-grade material that is equal to any clay that hardens when dry. The material is known for its use in stop-motion animation. The benefit of plasticine is the dust-free, direct experience that requires no additional processes. The clay is soft when warmed in the hand and stays workable which allows for a wide range of mark-making.

Techniques in sculpting with plasticine include subtractive method, additive method, relief carving, creating texture and embellishing with materials. A range of carving tools can be used from traditional tools to household items including toothpicks for fine lines. Embellishing sculpted objects is a creative way that brings character to any finished piece.
