Welcome to Wire Workshops

An original program designed to encourage creative learning

ABOUT
Wire workshops are delivered in a fun and contemporary way using reclaimed telephone wire. The wire is an exciting and expressive material that is highly creative and fun for all. The material is fine copper wire that is colour-coated, soft to the touch and easy to work with. The process of bending, twisting and wrapping is presented in lessons on technique while also introducing tools and the use of other materials. Projects are highly adaptive with individual work or collaborative projects offered.

Tools for working in wire range from the finest cutters and pliers used by jewellers to heavy duty cutters for rebar. Bench blocks, mandrels and jigs will allow for experimentation as students learn how wire is made with samples of wire shapes and gauges to try.

Twisting

Twisting wire leads to creating three dimensions structures in this open-ended introduction. Once familiar with twisting techniques students will begin to see the number of constructed structures in the world (fences, baskets, netting) that utilize the same technique.

Shaping

Shaping wire is foundational to understanding both the potential and limits of wire. Wire sometime has memory and may not always bend the way you want. Explore shapes in this discovery made by each student using small pliers, large clamps and various supporting tools.

Weaving

Weaving introduces learners of all levels to the creative potential of wire. With colour-coated copper wire students begin with simple twists and turns as they work towards more elaborate weaves. The vast array of possibility borrows from jewelry, fabric and knot making.

Wrapping
